Step 1:

Leave the Bandage On

After your tattoo session, your artist will cover your new ink with a bandage or a plastic wrap. This initial covering is crucial for protecting your tattoo from bacteria and dirt during the first few hours. It’s crucial to keep the bandage on for at least the first few hours, as advised by your artist. Remember, patience is key!

Step 2:

Gently Clean the Area

Once it's time to remove the bandage, wash your hands thoroughly. Then, use lukewarm water and a mild, unscented soap to gently clean the tattooed area. Avoid using any abrasive cloths or sponges—pat the area dry with a clean paper towel instead. This step helps prevent infection and removes any excess ink or blood.

Step 3:

Moisturize

Keeping your tattoo moisturized is vital for proper healing. After cleaning, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, water-based moisturizer or an aftercare ointment recommended by your tattoo artist. Avoid applying too much product, as it can suffocate the tattoo and prevent it from healing well.

Step 4:

Avoid Sun Exposure

Your new tattoo is sensitive and susceptible to sunburn, which can lead to fading and irritation. During the healing process, try to keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight. Once healed, always apply a high-SPF sunscreen before sun exposure to protect the colors and prevent fading.

Step 5:

Don’t Scratch or Pick

As the tattoo heals, it may scab or peel, which is completely normal. However, it’s essential to resist the urge to scratch or pick at your tattoo, as this can cause scarring and affect the design. Instead, keep your hands off and continue the moisturizing routine to ensure a smoother healing process.

Step 6:

Follow Up with Your Artist

Once the healing process is complete—typically between 2 to 4 weeks—consider scheduling a follow-up appointment with your tattoo artist for a touch-up if needed. This allows your artist to enhance any areas that may not have healed as vibrantly as others, ensuring your tattoo looks flawless.

By following these simple six steps, you’ll provide the best care for your new tattoo, allowing it to heal properly and shine for years to come. Remember, every tattoo is unique, and aftercare may vary based on individual skin types and tattoo placements. Always consult with your tattoo artist for personalized aftercare instructions.
